Wild Life

This picture stood out to me for a few reasons. First the movement of the wild bird was captured perfectly. The contrast of colors as well as the it being in the center of the picture make it the focal point. The water drops captured by using a very fast shutter speed, make it real and as if we are watching this bird in action , expecting for it to disappear any second. The fish in its beak is proof of this bird's hunting skills. For me this picture stands out because of the contrast between black color in the background the drops of water and the bright colors of the bird. The movement of the bird as well as the planar perspective this picture was taken from make it very real. I think this picture represents wild life very well.

72nd & Broadway

72nd & Broadway by Markus Hartel; Markus Hartel Street Photography Blog (http://www.markushartel.com/blog/)

This photograph provides the viewer with a unique perspective of New York City. By shooting the image from high above the ground, the photographer truly removes himself from the scene in which he photographed . This allows the viewer to look at the hustle and bustle of New York from a different perspective, and, for me, the city seems a little less hectic when it is viewed from above street-level. The definitive lines of the intersection, as well as the lines marking the crosswalks, contrast the flowing lines of light which are created by the fast-moving cars below. An interesting element of this photograph is the way the photographer utilized light to represent movement. If one were to view the activity in this scene in person, it would not appear nearly as beautiful as it does in the photograph. The way in which the fast-paced activity is captured in this photograph provides the viewer with an aesthetically pleasing image of city life.

Blind Spot Magazine; Nora Schultz; Untitled 2010

What I believe works best in this photo is the flow of time moving towards the top of the frame. Though the quote suggests we should "seize the time," the flow of the separate "time[s]" also suggests that time inevitably continues (perhaps the very reason why we should strive to "seize the time"). This perpetual march of time is also implied by the movement of feet in the right half of the picture. Additionally, the text boxes in which "time" appears become sequentially smaller as they move closer to the top of the photo. This perhaps suggests our inability to manipulate time, and how (over time) time seems to increasingly elude us.

Family Portrait

By: Aaron Gustafon
As I was looking through iheartphotograph blog to find a picture to write about for this week, I saw this picture on the side. I thought this picture was so interesting due to the white cut out that is in this "family portrait." There is sadness displayed in both the mother's face and the son's face. The background is also composed of very gloomy, dull colors. The emotions expressed and the colors in the picture all lead to a dark setting. Really, the only color that stands out in this picture is the white cut out. This could be due to the artist waanting this particular person to stand out. There could be several reasons why there is a cut out in the picture. One of these reasons could be that a son as well as brother was lost at a young age. The cut out is small, so it must be a child that is depicted. Another reason for the cut out could be a longing for a brother or son. This picture provoked emotion in me and that is why I have choosen this picture to write about this week.

I like this picture because it has a unique feel to it. The focus of the photograph are the stack of books above a scorched table.

The light in the photograph seems to be coming from the sun reflected on the books and wall. The only space which is not hit by the sunlight is everything below the top of the table.

The table in the photo gives it depth. the positive space is the stack of books, and the negative space is the background wall and floor which are scorched.

The cover of the books are soft to the hand, but the wall seems harsh to the touch of the hand. The texture seems to play a big role in this photo. Also the prospective from which it is taken adds a lot of mystery to it.

The books have their original colors, the background wall and floor, including the table have hues of black and grey.

Wasted Illuminations by Tris Vonna-Michell

This picture really stood out to me on iheartphotograph. This picture tells a story of someone's past. All of the good and bad memories can be seen in the pictures that are scaettered on the floor. But what really stood out to me about this picture is the title of it, "Wasted Illuminations." By this title you can determine that there is sorrow in this person's life. Maybe it was a lost love or lost friendship. Whatever it may be it seems that this person regrets what has happened in their past. Or maybe the photographer believes that no matter how many pictures of the past that you take, you have to live in the future, not the past. The colors in this photograph are pretty simple, just sepia, black, and white. I think for this picture those colors really work due to the somber title of the photograph. The picture is taken above the photos so you can see the vast amount of memories.I also like the spacing between the assortment of pictures; It looks as if someone has just thrown them about due to their emotions.

First (make up)

Picture from life.com, taken by Spencer Platt 9/22/11

This picture was taken Thursday as stock markets in both Europe and the US took a dive. Perspective plays a big role in this picture, as focus singles out the one single investor in the foreground. By blurring the background and isolating this one stock trader, we are more apt to interpret the reaction and the complexity of emotion involved. Additionally, by displaying the relatively normal disposition of those around this one stock trader, we are able to more fully understand the the isolated pain of those who were hit the hardest.

Eye Drop

I really enjoy looking at the photo because the shot really captures the movement of the water on the eye. Using a very slow shutter speed, the water droplet is transformed into multiple droplets and once it hits the eye, there are miniature waves of water created on the eye. It looks as if the eye ball is made of jelly. If a slow shutter speed was not used in this photo, the entire concept and movement would be lost. It would just be a closeup of the eye. Another reason that I love this photo is because two years ago I began taking closeup shots of eyes like this. But this photo adds a whole entire new subject to it by added the movement of the water. It really is a masterpiece is my eyes!

I really like this picture because even tho it is nature and it shows a scenic view it has a lot of depth. This depth is achieved by the contrast and lightning of the picture. I believe the focus of this picture is the river and the lightning reflected in the water makes it pop out from the rest of the scene. The rest of the forest kind of blends in all together due to the compression of the trees. The natural light from the sun above is softly reflected onto the mountains tops while the forest is very dark. The mountains in the photo with their white tops create a sense of direction which connects with that of the river below it. The photographer used black and white and I really love that. The way he captured lightning and the use of space make this photograph unique.

Moonrise, Mamaroneck, New York, 1904

Taken by Edward Steichen

Photograph retrieved from Aperture Foundation (aperture.org)

This photograph taken by Edward Steichen caught my eye because of the delicate emotions it conveys. The stillness of the scene is both calming and captivating. The unique way that light is distributed within the image draws your eye to the space between the trees and makes you wonder what is beyond the space that Steichen chose to photograph. Another aspect of the photograph which stood out for me is the reflection of the trees on the pond. The reflection of the trees on the pond combined with the setting sun which shines through between the trees conveys a sense of tranquility. This photograph depicts such a simple scene, yet it powerfully conveys how important it is to take a step back from our busy lives and appreciate the simple beauties in life.

This picture interested me immediately because it’s very reminiscent of some of the lecture halls I’ve has class in. Upon further investigation, I realized that it has undercurrents of a mutual distaste for learning in such lecture halls (or possibly formal education in general). The classroom feels very sterile, reinforced particularly by all white walls and ceilings, and uncomfortable benches. Additionally, the photo is taken from the back of the classroom, indicating distance between the professor and the student (and possibly a metaphor along the same lines). The symmetry in the classroom, and its vacancy as well, seem to work in effect with the previously mentioned issues. In summation, I believe the photo deals with some of the grievances of an uninspired education.

The Beauty of Love and Nature

As I was going through the iheartphotograh blog I was looking for a picture that could relate to my life. I took a deep interest in this picture not only because of the scenery in the picture, but also because of the emotions that can be seen on the faces of the boy and girl in the picture. The focus appears to be on them and their playful, intimate connection. They seem to be in a world of their own which is reflected by them being surrounded by the flowers. I can relate to the kind of connection the boy and girl are portraying in this picture and I feel that because of this, I was drawn to this picture. Besides the focus on the lovers, it appears that they are sitting in an area that is covered with flowers. Not only does this add to the intimacy of the photo, but also adds bright colors. The yellow makes the flowers really stand out. Besides the bright, yellow flowers, the rest of the picture has pretty dull colors. For me, this picture works because the couple is in the center as though they are the most important part of this picture. Their emotions toward each other captivated me. This picture displays two of the most important parts of life: love and the beauty of nature.
