Moonrise, Mamaroneck, New York, 1904
Taken by Edward Steichen
Photograph retrieved from Aperture Foundation (aperture.org)
This photograph taken by Edward Steichen caught my eye because of the delicate emotions it conveys. The stillness of the scene is both calming and captivating. The unique way that light is distributed within the image draws your eye to the space between the trees and makes you wonder what is beyond the space that Steichen chose to photograph. Another aspect of the photograph which stood out for me is the reflection of the trees on the pond. The reflection of the trees on the pond combined with the setting sun which shines through between the trees conveys a sense of tranquility. This photograph depicts such a simple scene, yet it powerfully conveys how important it is to take a step back from our busy lives and appreciate the simple beauties in life.
